David “Bear” Houston grows up in Redfield, Kansas, known by almost everyone as the dependable, oversized football player with an easy smile. Beneath that familiar role, however, he spends much of high school trying to understand his sexuality and wondering what honesty might cost him.

College gives Bear room to become more than the person his hometown expected. At Eastern Missouri University, art becomes a serious calling, new friendships widen his world, and the question of belonging begins to shift from Where do I fit? to What kind of life do I want to build?

James Houston

A man shaped by hard work, football dreams, and a love for his son that has to learn new language.

James raised Bear in Redfield and built much of their life around work, routine, and football. His expectations weigh heavily on Bear, but so does the affection beneath them. As Bear begins choosing a path of his own, father and son have to decide whether their relationship can grow with him.

James’s journey is as much about listening as it is about letting go of the future he once pictured for his son.

Kyle Wilson

The new left tackle who makes Bear’s carefully ordered world impossible to ignore.

Kyle arrives in Redfield as a transfer student from Kansas City, confident enough to stand apart from the town without constantly apologizing for it. His friendship with Bear quickly becomes the emotional catalyst Bear has been trying to avoid.

Warm, outspoken, and willing to challenge cruelty when he sees it, Kyle shows Bear that honesty can be frightening without being impossible.

Alex Rollins

The classmate who turns a first-day conversation into one of Bear’s most important college friendships.

Bear meets Alex in Drawing I, where Alex’s humor and openness immediately make an unfamiliar classroom feel less intimidating. An art student with an enthusiasm for emerging technology, Alex introduces Bear to email, Mosaic, and the idea that computers might become another creative canvas.

Alex has a way of making the unfamiliar feel possible — whether the subject is art, technology, or simply learning how to be yourself around another person.

Chip Atwell

Quiet, observant, and deeply loyal — a friendship that becomes part of what makes EMU feel like home.

Coleman “Chip” Atwell comes to Eastern Missouri University from Memphis to study geology. Bear first comes to know him through Tau Phi Epsilon, where both young men are searching for connection in a place much larger than the worlds they came from.

By the end of freshman year, Chip is not simply another fraternity brother. He is Bear’s roommate, confidant, and one of the people who understands that sometimes support means being present without demanding that every feeling be explained.
