Bear begins the summer between freshman and sophomore year with something he has never had before: a real opportunity to test himself as a designer. An internship in Eastern Missouri University’s art department moves him beyond classroom assignments and into his first experiences with professional graphic design.
At the same time, the fraternity that once seemed like an uncertain experiment is becoming one of the anchors of his life. His brothers begin to see leadership in him before Bear is fully ready to see it in himself, asking him to step forward, help others, and discover what responsibility looks like when people are counting on him.
And as Bear’s world grows, so do his relationships. His bond with Chip deepens, while Dan Morales—a warm, quick-witted presence from campus radio—opens another unexpected door. Bear must learn that honesty about who he is does not end with coming out. Sometimes the harder truth is admitting what, and whom, your heart has made room for.

Bear’s internship challenges the instinct to hide uncertainty behind hard work. Learning to ask questions, accept critique, and trust his growing skill becomes part of learning what professional confidence actually looks like.
Tau Phi Epsilon has already given Bear a place to belong. Now his brothers begin asking him to help create that same sense of welcome and trust for the men coming after him.
Chip’s quiet steadiness and Dan’s warmth each matter to Bear in different ways. Sophomore year asks him to stop assuming relationships must follow one familiar shape and start listening more closely to what those connections are becoming.
Behind the Cover
The Book Three cover places the Tau Phi Epsilon house front and center for a reason. It is no longer simply one of the places Bear visits on campus. By sophomore year, the house represents continuity, friendship, expectation, and a growing responsibility to something larger than himself.
The title comes directly from the fraternity’s motto, Fortes in Unitate—“Strength in Unity.” The idea echoes beyond fraternity life as Bear learns that independence does not have to mean handling everything alone.
From Chapter One
“He was home.”
Book Three opens with Bear returning to Tau Phi Epsilon for the summer. Most of the brothers are gone, the house is unusually quiet, and his first professional design experience begins the next morning.
Bear arrived at EMU wondering whether he would ever fit. By the beginning of Strength in Unity, he has friends, a fraternity, an artistic direction, and a campus that feels like home. What he does not yet have is a clear idea of how all those pieces fit together—or how much they are about to ask him to grow.
